"The Shade" by Rex Orange County is a song about the fear of losing someone you love and the lengths you'll go to keep them in your life. The protagonist in the song is doing everything in their power to make sure their loved one feels safe and secure. They start by closing all the blinds so that their loved one can sleep through the night. They stay by their side to make sure they're okay. They then start painting their walls in different shades just to see if their loved one likes them.The protagonist is so afraid of losing their loved one that they want to be stuck to their side and not with anybody else. They fear that if their loved one leaves, they will be left alone, and that thought is unbearable. They are willing to do anything to keep their loved one in their life, even if it means occupying themselves with things that aren't important just to keep them around.Despite trying to give their loved one some space, the protagonist can't help but open the door just to see if they would walk through. They are constantly seeking validation from their loved one, even if it means sacrificing their own happiness. The protagonist's fear of being alone and losing their loved one is palpable throughout the song, and they end the song pleading with their loved one not to go.
